Welcome and Outline

Pre-calculus Math 11 Course Outline (for self-paced students)
Welcome to self-paced Pre-calculus Math 11!
(There is also a class available for this course. Please talk to a teacher if you are interested in a class.)

A. You will need:
1. This handout
2. A self-paced card
3. Pre-calculus workbook which you will buy. You can write in it.
4. A graphing calculator handout
5. A scientific calculator and a graphing calculator. (You can rent one from us)

B. Marks:

8 chapter tests worth 10% =   80%
1 final exam worth                  20%
                                               100%
*You must pass the final exam to pass the course.

**You will use a graphing calculator on parts of chapter tests and the final exam.

C. To complete Pre-calculus 11:

1. Do the readings and homework as assigned in the course instructions.
2. All the answers to the questions are in your workbook.
3. When you don’t understand something, please ask a teacher in the lab.
4. Work towards really understanding the concepts and learning to apply them to a variety of
    problems. It is not enough to just memorize procedures.
5. Some chapter Tests are divided into two parts: the first you will complete with the help of a
    scientific calculator, and the second, you will complete with the help of a graphing calculator.

D. To start the course and get your first assignment:
1.  Go to Pearson ALC’s home page: www.newwestadultlearning.ca
2. Click "Adult Learning Centre site" on the left side of the page.
3. Click “Courses”
4. Click “Mathematics”
5. Click “Pre-calculus Math”
6. Click on Chapter 1 “Sequences and Series”
7. Print out the Word file which has the instructions for Chapter 1.

After you have completed each chapter and the chapter test, you will go back to our website to get the instructions for the next chapter.
